Why fish is great for your health! šš
š Fatty, oily fish such as salmon is rich in omega 3-fatty acids. According to the American Heart Association, consumption of omega-3 fatty acids may reduce oneās risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
𩺠Omega-3s are a type of unsaturated fatty acid found in plant and animal sources. Consuming Omega-3s is extremely beneficial for your health in a number of ways. For one, Omega-3s support your heart by reducing harmful triglycerides and may lower your blood pressure. Additionally, deficiency in Omega-3s can attribute to rough, itchy skin and can interfere with proper functioning of the brain and immune system.
3ļøā£ Three essential Omega-3 fatty acids primarily studied in fish are called ALA, DHA, and EPA. ALA is more commonly found in plant oils such as flaxseed oil, while DHA and EPA are present in fish.
ā”ļøFun fact: Fish donāt manufacture DHA and EPA themselves, they consume the fatty acids in the form of algae, store it, and then pass the benefits on to us.
āš¼Two essential Omega-3 fatty acids present in fish oil are DHA and EPA. Fatty acids DHA and EPA are essential to cell membrane composition, especially in the brain and eyes. This is why consuming DHA may be beneficial for mental health. Additionally, consumption of DHA and EPA may reduce inflammation in the body by promoting less inflammatory conditions. Uncontrolled inflammation in the body can lead to blood vessel damage, and eventually result in heart disease and/or a stroke.
š„¬ While other plant foods such as walnuts, flaxseed, chia seeds, and green leafy vegetables all contain omega-3 fatty acids, none contain quite as much as fish, which provides the biggest bang for your buck!
